East & Central Africa's Premier Annual Golf Event

The Kenya Open Golf Championship is East and Central Africa’s premier annual golf event. First played in 1967 at the Muthaiga Golf Club, the tournament has transformed over time to attain a European Tour status having first attained a European Challenge Tour status in 1991.

Over the course of its existence, the Kenya Open Golf Championship has attracted some of the world’s top golfers; making it an integral part of the growth of global golf superstars.  

Some of the renowned global golf stars that have played at won at the Kenya Open Golf Championship include some of Europe’s biggest Ryder Cup stars like Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Ken Brown and Christy O’Connor Jr, as well as future Masters champion Trevor Immelman.

The most successful player being England’s Maurice Bembridge, who recorded three victories between 1968 and 1979. The Kenya Open continues to grow with each passing event. The list of past champions who took part this year event underlines the increasing strength of the tour and that of Kenya as a preferred destination of choice for golfers.

The event has been held at two venues: The Muthaiga Golf Club and the Karen Country Club in Nairobi; offering players a unique challenge at each venue. As the stature of the event has grown, so has its prize money. The current purse stands at €1.1 Million up from €500,000 in 2018 when the tournament was still part of the European Challenge Tour.

Kenya’s glorious weather makes it possible to play golf 365 days in a year; giving visiting players at the Kenya Open Golf Championship, an opportunity to play golf a cross the four days of the tournament and take in the magic of Kenya during the same time.
